Luc Frieden, president of the Chamber of Commerce and currently accompanying the Luxembourg delegation in Morocco, has said that European businesses have neglected Africa as a whole. He said he saw great potential in the North African country, in part due to its stability and well trained workforce.

This was the former minister's first assignment in his new role as President of the Chamber of Commerce. Frieden's priorities for the next five years revolve around the international development of Luxembourg companies and digitalisation. He talked of exchanging and developing programs together in the digital area, but also in industry and the provision of financial services, thus turning to Africa.

Frieden suggested Morocco could act as a bridge between Europe and other African states. Many finances already pass through Morocco, with numerous banks situated in the country, which then expand to West Africa.

A number of Luxembourgish businesses are already active in Morocco, such as ArcelorMittal. The development on the continent could contribute to reducing social issues. Frieden also suggested it could reduce the migration to Europe.

In addition to the above, Frieden said he wanted the Chamber of Commerce to carry out missions without the government in Africa, China or other European states, in order to verify growth and thus attract employees to Luxembourg. This work would also enable companies with production in the Grand Duchy to sell their wares abroad.
