The International School in Differdange has organised a summer school camp alongside Miami University to help Luxembourgish pupils improve their English. Over the course of two weeks, the camp will host fun activities for students, with the caveat that these activities are in English.
Secondary school students are taking part in the first week whereas the second week is reserved for primary school pupils. Nine students from the United States are hosting the camp, spending time with the Luxembourgish youths and providing them with a practice-orientated way to learn English.
One of the children pointed out that the camp made sense as English is the most widely-spoken language, and is often a language used when you go to a different country. They continued: "If you have the opportunity to learn a language, then clearly it should be English."
The International School has worked closely with Miami University since it was founded, with the summer school making up one of the many projects carried out by both partners. Miami University is, however, not the city in Florida, but a city in the state Ohio.
The first edition of the camp is taking place in Differdange Castle, which has been rented by Miami University for 21 years. The castle has a host of classrooms and a large garden as part of its amenities. The student teachers are using interactive methods to take pupils on a cultural trip, as explained by Gilles Krecké, teacher at the International School. The kids learn to play English or American games in the park, such as dodgeball or kickball. Last week, students took a virtual trip through the US to learn about the different states.
The camp concludes this week, after which the American students return to the States.
