Food waste survey Did you know that more than 90kg of food is wasted per person in Luxembourg?

According to a Eurostat survey, Luxembourg is among the top 3 biggest food waste countries in Europe.

Eurostat released a survey on the average food waste in the EU in 2020. In the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, the average EU citizen wasted 70kg of food. The top 3 countries with the biggest food waste households were Portugal with 127kg and Italy with 107kg, followed by Luxembourg with 91kg per person. The countries with the smallest food waste households numbers were Bulgaria with 26kg, Spain with 30kg and Slovenia with 36kg per person.

When including restaurant waste, shops and other food distribution statistics, the average food wasted per person is 127kg in the EU. The new survey comes approximately one month after another survey revealed that Luxembourg’s households throw away food items on a regular basis.

If you want contribute to reducing food waste numbers in Luxembourg, the ‘Onperfekt’ (“Imperfect”) initiative in Luxembourg tries to minimize food waste by distributing food that is considered “imperfect”, but is still perfectly edible. They started with a pop-up market in Hosingen before opening their own store in Marnach.
