On Sunday, the annual service honouring the memory of those who lost their lives defending Luxembourg during World War II took place in the capital

The service has been organised on annual basis since 1946. The focus of this year's edition was put on the female victims of the Nazi regime.

They deserve their place in history."

Claude Wolf, president of the WWII Memorial Committee, emphasised the point made by Bettel: "Our efforts to write this chapter may be late, but with the help of one of the remaining survivors, we have begun making up for this omission."

The ceremonial march began as at the central station and ended at the "Monument National de la Solidarité Luxembourgeoise". It represented, as always, an opportunity to reflect on past sacrifices and the importance of solidarity.

Nearby, a similar commemoration ceremony was held for the Jewish victims of the Holocaust in Luxembourg. An important act, according to Albert Aflalo, president of the Israeli consistory, who warned of renewed anti-Semitic tendencies across the world.

Apart from the memorial cervices in the capital, further commemorative events were organised across the Grand Duchy.
