The role of quaestor is one of the highest-ranking positions in the European Parliament. Hansen, a member of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) in Luxembourg, was elected in the first round of voting on Wednesday morning with 576 out of 676 possible votes.

Hansen is thus from now on one of the European Parliament’s five quaestors and will work directly under the new president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. The European Parliament has one president, 14 vice-presidents, and five quaestors.

Until 2014, another CSV politician, Astrid Lulling, served as a quaestor. After Lulling’s departure, Luxembourg did not have any representatives in the European Parliament’s highest office.

The team of quaestors has a mandate until 2024 and will oversee administrative and financial matters directly affecting MEPs.
