Not everyone is able to to spend Christmas at home with their loved ones. But the Christmas meal by Noël de la Rue offers those who might otherwise have to fend for themselves the chance to have a hot meal with company and a sympathetic ear.
Around 50 volunteers participated in the event, designed to help homeless people increase social contacts.
The guests also received gifts, consisting of practical items such as towels and pillowcases, but also soft toys to act as comfort, said committee member Sonny Lugen.
Due to the most recent announcement of Covid measures, organisers were unsure right up to the last minute if the event could even go ahead in its planned format. Organisers had gathered at two locations, just in case.
Léon Kraus, another member of the organising committee, said the event had been a challenge this year. They opted to split it across two venues in Hollerich and Esch-sur-Alzette to increase social distancing, and guests had taken rapid tests before being seated. It worked well in spite of the measures, he said, as all those present showed great discipline.
The 40th edition of Noël de la Rue proved popular with its guests in spite of the testing requirement, with a good turnout all round. The organisation thanked the public for all donations, which are directly passed on to those affected.
