Emergency services were called to Trier harbour at approximately 11.15am, after a pile of scrap metal caught fire at the eastern quay. According to local reports, a team of 50 firefighters was dispatched to the scene to tackle the flames at the premises of a scrap metal business.
Professional firefighters arrived with several vehicles and used aerial ladders to help cool the metal with water. Authorities confirmed that there was no danger to the environment and, according to initial information, no injuries were reported. The police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
A similar incident occurred at the end of July at the harbour in Mertert, where 70 to 80 firefighters worked to extinguish a blaze in another pile of scrap metal. At that time, the large amount of smoke triggered a LU-Alert warning for the area.
