The retirement of Alain Duschène was officially signed off in January 2020. The former chief of defence will be succeeded by Steve Thull:

They therefore issued a press release, noting that due to the circumstances and the nature of the transition, no festivities should be held for the occasion. SPAL furthermore explained that their absence should be considered a backing of union president Christian Schleck, who was treated "dishonourably" by Duschène. Nevertheless, the union expressed their hopes to improve their relation with the new chief. SPFP, the professional union for public forces, also issued a press release supporting the position of SPAL.
