
However, the capacity of 69 cubic metres has become insufficient to deal with the water masses. The decision to enlarge the plant was already taken in 2016, but construction work only started in March this year. The goal is to expand the capacity limit to 600 cubic metres, so almost ten times as much as the former amount.
Construction work is expected to last one and a half years, with new pipes and water reservoirs currently being installed. Once the project is finished, the purification plant will no longer be comparable to the former site, officials noted.
The expansion costs around €5.5 million. €2 million will be covered by the Luxembourg government, while municipalities Fischbach and Mersch will cover the rest.
