Family and social policy'Basic child allowance' and reduced working hours for parents among Green Party proposals

RTL Today
The Green Party presented another section of its election programme, with a specific focus on the issues of family and children. The party places a significant emphasis on the well-being of children, asserting that a society which invests in its children is investing in its own future.

Seeking measures to bolster this vision, the Green Party has introduced the concept of a ‘basic child allowance’ within their most recent proposals. This allowance would comprise of two components: first, a universal basic amount, anchored alongside the country’s existing child benefit. Secondly, an extra amount to be disbursed based on household income. The Green Party envisions streamlining this process through a ‘one-stop shop’ to consolidate assistance and requests, with the aim of reducing overall administrative burdens.

Djuna Bernard, Green Party president, underscores the importance of this move, stating, “the measure is also meant to reduce the number of requests in general. Digitalisation offers enormous potential to make things easier and more accessible for people.”

The Green Party also wants to improve parental leave, which currently extends up to six months. To achieve this, the party proposes reduced working hours for parents. Sam Tanson, the national lead candidate, elaborates on this proposition, explaining that “parents with young children should still be able to benefit from 20 to 30% reduced working hours after parental leave, to spend more time with their little ones.” This benefit would be tied to additional financial support from the state. Tanson explained that the ultimate objective is to enable parents to spend more time with their children, reducing reliance on external care options.
