Shortly before 1am on Tuesday morning, 112 received a report of a fire on Rue de Luxembourg in Bertrange, where a flat, on the seventh floor, was ablaze. According to the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), no one was injured. Rescue teams from Luxembourg City, Bertrange, Mamer, Dippach, and Hesperange, along with the Luxembourg City emergency medical service (SAMU), were on duty at the scene.
According to the CGDIS bulletin, 50 people had to be relocated for the night due to the fire. Some were able to stay with friends or neighbours, and a few residents were still on holidays.
Bertrange Mayor Youri De Smet confirmed in response to an inquiry from RTL that around 20 of the relocated people were accommodated at the Centre Atert. They were still there on Tuesday morning, and are not expected to be able to return to their apartments until around 3 or 4 p.m. Firefighters and the technical police are still inside the building examining the scene and securing evidence.
According to the mayor, the apartments have been affected to varying degrees by smoke and water used to extinguish the fire. On Tuesday afternoon, the municipality will assess which apartments can be occupied again. For families who are still unable to return to their homes tonight, the municipality intends to arrange hotel rooms. De Smet remained at the scene with municipal staff until around 6 a.m.
According to initial findings, the fire broke out on the 7th floor. At present, it appears that the flames spread via the balconies to the floors below. The Plexiglas in the balcony railings melted from the heat and fell downwards.
In other emergency events, shortly after 9pm, teams were called out in Echternach after a tree caught fire. Crews from Dalheim and Frisange then had to tackle a vegetation fire between Filsdorf and Aspelt. A car fire followed between Bissen and Pettingen shortly before 7pm. Teams from Mersch, Bissen, and Colmar-Berg were on site, and one person was injured.
There was also an accident involving two vehicles on Boulevard Joseph II in the capital, though only material damage was reported. The city's emergency teams were dispatched to the scene. One person was injured after a motorcyclist came off his bike near Poteau de Harlange. The ambulance from Wiltz and the fire brigade from Lac de la Haute-Sûre attended. A further person was injured in Dippach when a car and a motorcycle collided. The Sanem-Differdange team supported local colleagues.
