International Press Freedom DayALJP reiterates its call for a right of access to information

The Luxembourgish Journalists' Association spoke out against the current state of national press freedom on Tuesday.

In a written statement, the association deemed it ‘pathetic’ that there is still no such right which is enshrined in law.

The ALJP then continues and demands a more clearly anchored definition of a journalist, so that there is no ambiguity when press cards or press assistance is given.

In addition, the so-called ‘Circulaire Bettel’ must also be scrapped. This memo ensures that a state official may not talk to the press without first clearing the matter with the chairman - an absurd and anti-democratic approach according to the ALJP.

Reporters without borders is to present new figures on the situation of journalists and coworkers of the medium houses world-wide this Wednesday. In the course of 2023, five journalists have died during their working time, whilst 540 are in prison.

According to the organization, Luxembourg currently ranks 20th in press freedom worldwide. A pain point to the NGO is that Luxembourgish administrations often hesitate to release information.

Norway, Ireland and Denmark rank best in this year’s findings, whereas China is in last place.
