The eventual end of the war in Ukraine should not be decided without Ukraine, says Xavier Bettel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in an interview with RTL.

Donald Trump on Sunday accused Ukrainian leaders of showing " no gratitude " towards the United States, as he tries to impose an agreement to end the conflict, which is contested by Kyiv.

In a message on Truth Social, the American president also attacks Europeans, " who continue to buy oil from Russia " and his predecessor Joe Biden, whom he accuses of inaction at the beginning of the conflict.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that the American plan to end the war with Russia should include " Ukrainian perspectives ", after meetings in Switzerland between Ukrainians, Americans and Europeans.

" It appears that the American proposals could include a number of elements based on Ukrainian perspectives and essential to Ukraine's national interests ," Zelensky said on X.

Xavier Bettel's reaction

International borders cannot be changed by force, and however a peace may be negotiated in the Ukrainian conflict, Ukraine must be a party to the discussions, Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel said on Saturday.

Ukrainian, American and European officials are meeting this Sunday in Geneva to discuss Donald Trump's plan for Ukraine , which is generating fears in Kyiv of a forced capitulation.

Xavier Bettel welcomes any effort to end the war, including the American initiative. However, according to the Luxembourg minister, the proposed American peace plan contains elements that Ukraine would rightly consider unacceptable.

"It's really very, very, very complicated. As always, I have the impression that the European Union is being left out in the cold, meaning that the Americans are trying to negotiate something and the Europeans will have to foot the bill. It's starting to annoy me.

The principle should be: nothing decided for Ukraine, without Ukraine. But I have the feeling that we're about to impose a diktat on the Ukrainians. I hope that the coming days will allow the Ukrainians, as well as several European countries, to put pressure on President Trump to adopt more reasonable positions, that is to say, no reward for Russia and no humiliation for the Ukrainians," Xavier Bettel explained to RTL .

German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz also made similar remarks. A war cannot be ended without consulting the countries involved. EU agreement is also necessary. If Ukraine were to lose this conflict and collapse, it would have repercussions for the whole of European politics, and even for the entire continent, according to Merz.
