The parking situation in Mondorf-les-Bains is a challenge for both residents and visitors, with some describing the situation as 'catastrophic'.

"There's a lot of work going on," one man told RTL's reporters, while others called it a "catastrophe" and said they were having to allow a lot more time to find parking before going anywhere in Mondorf.

Annoyed citizens "Parking here is a catastrophe"

Mayor Steve Reckel told RTL he agreed that things were not agreeable as they stand. Currently there are numerous construction sites around the municipality, but Reckel said he felt there were sufficient spaces in the town. "We have a lot of parking spaces but not in every neighbourhood. For example, next to the town hall there are always spaces in the afternoon."

The area around the Domaine Thermal spa is particularly affected by parking issues, as a number of spaces have disappeared due to renovations.

"The situation there is quite difficult at the moment," admitted Reckel. "It's been the case for half a year but more spaces have been removed due to the construction of the 'Base de vie'".

Lack of communication

The removal of the parking spaces came as a surprise to the local council. "We weren't informed of this and the Domaine Thermal also received the information quite late."

Now, authorities are trying to coordinate alternatives. "The casino has helped by making 50 spaces available for staff."

For spa clients, other options are on the table, such as using the football pitch car park and operating a shuttle bus service between the pitch and the spa.

The council is also trying to encourage residents to make use of the bus network. "We have 2,000 spaces in Mondorf. Sometimes they will have to walk 500 metres."

Roadworks on the main road, six months ahead of goal

Another stress factor for Mondorf motorists are the roadworks on the town's main road, where the council has been working on the project for over 15 years. Reckel expressed optimism. "We are currently six months ahead of our plan and I believe we should be finished in June or July next year."

The main road has been completely reworked to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The goal is to increase visibility and the attractiveness of the town and the area around the spa.

Additional 200 parking spaces at Domaine Thermal

It is clear that the Domaine Thermal will have to add parking spaces after the extension is complete. A study is ongoing, and mayor Reckel said he expects around 200 more spaces will be required.

Due to the construction works, several disabled spaces have temporarily been put out of use. The council is working on finding a solution for this.
