A violent mugging took place on 29 October shortly after 6pm at the Luxembourg City train station, where the victim had her necklace stolen.
Following the incident, the victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted RTL to share her account of the attack. She said she had entered the train station with three friends, when they were approached by a young man speaking French. He asked the woman if she had a lighter, to which she said no, but he remained insistent and continued to engage her in conversation. He grabbed her by the shoulders several times to bring her closer to him. She began to feel scared and tried to make her way to the station exit.
Next, the man became aggressive and hit the woman twice in the throat, before running away. According to the victim, there was a second person who joined the attacker when he fled. Both individuals were caught on CCTV and were observed by witnesses at the scene.
"I was very shocked and scared," the victim said. "I asked myself why he'd hit me in the throat. So I went to the station security staff and told them what had happened, and while I was explaining the situation, I realised my expensive gold necklace was missing. I felt terrible... even now when I'm talking about it, my hands still shake." The woman is visibly still affected by the incident.
The security officer had difficulty understanding the victim as he did not speak English, but accompanied her to the nearest police station. After several minutes, no one appeared to speak to the victim, despite the report, so she decided to call the emergency line on 113. Police officers then arrived on the scene to take the victim's statement and speak to witnesses. At the same time, officers showed the woman a number of images in order to help identify the attacker.
Deep psychological after-effects
The police located the suspect shortly afterwards and took him into custody. The victim was still present at the police station when this took place. "I was still afraid. I could see the thief through a glass window at the police station, escorted by officers. It was definitely him, he was wearing the same black jacket."
The necklace, however, was not located. The victim has no updates on the investigation as it currently stands. According to police, the thief was arrested by order of the public prosecutor's office and brought before an investigative judge.
The victim is not European, but is currently living and studying in Luxembourg. She said the incident has had a huge impact on her mental health and that she is still suffering from the after-effects of the attack. She called it "psychological trauma", which has left her with concentration issues and means she no longer feels safe. In order to go to classes, she must often go past the site of the attack, which is a stressful experience. The loss of her necklace, her only real valuable item from her home country and a gift from her mother, has left her feeling sad and depressed, and she said she hopes the necklace can be returned to her one day.
