Police urge victims to prioritise their safety during home invasions, advising people to hand over cash, jewellery, and other valuables rather than resist, in order to avoid further risk.
As colder months set in, concerns about burglaries and home invasions tend to rise. However, according to police figures, such incidents have slightly decreased, from 1,599 cases in 2023 to 1,569 in 2024.
Police caution that so-called 'homejackings' often involve car thefts and can sometimes turn violent, threatening the homeowners in their own home. "The homeowners are then tied up so the robbers can get to valuables," explained police officer Tim Pauly.
Most of all, one should not try to play the hero during a home invasion. "You never know how people can react. Do they have weapons, what to they want to do? These are criminal gangs and it's brutal," Pauly added.
If residents come home to find signs of a break-in, they should immediately call 113.
According to the police, their tracking teams are well-equipped to handle such situations swiftly, safely, and get the job done.
