A huge Asian hornet nest was removed from the top of a spire of the church tower of the Neimënster Abbey. For services to even reach the heights of the spire to poison and remove the nest, a crane was installed next to the abbey. The operation was coordinated with the Nature and Forest Agency. While the intervention did not pose any dangers, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) and the security service of the Luxembourg City municipality were at the site to closely monitor the events.
"With Asian hornet, the problem is that its an invasive species, the species does not belong here. The Asian hornet has a negative effect on the local biodiversity as well as beekeepers as the hornets love to hunt local honeybees. The hornets prey on honeybees, which is a problem for beekeepers. At both European and national level, invasive species must, in principle, be controlled. For that reason, this nest had to be removed,” said Manon Bosch of the Luxembourg City's Environment Department.
