Pirates MP Marc Goergen and Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) MP Mars di Bartolomeo sought to find out how many general practitioners and specialists work in Luxembourg.

In her response, Health Minister Martine Deprez outlined how medical professions have evolved in Luxembourg over the past decade. The number of doctors has risen by 54 percent, with the sharpest increase among dentists, up more than 70 percent between 2014 and 2024. Looking back to 2012, the overall increase reaches 86.2 percent.

Luxembourg had 3,572 doctors in 2024, including 1,991 specialists. At the time, the country had 773 general practitioners and 808 dentists. 176 of them are Luxembourgish nationals, representing nearly 22%, and 170 are French.

The DP asked a parliamentary question last August about the distribution of doctors in Luxembourg. In the Health Minister's response, we learned that 42% of general practitioners were based in the centre of the country and that eastern Luxembourg had the oldest doctors.

When we look at the number of general practitioners per 1,000 inhabitants in Luxembourg and compare this figure with neighbouring countries, we see that Belgium and France have a higher number of general practitioners per 1,000 inhabitants than the Grand Duchy.

Between 2014 and 2023, Germany had the highest number of specialists per 1,000 inhabitants, with Luxembourg ranking second. In terms of dentists, Luxembourg is ahead of its neighbours in terms of the number of specialists per 1,000 inhabitants.
