As Luxembourg prepares for a historic change on the throne, a new RTL documentary chronicles the 25-year reign of Grand Duke Henri, examining how he guided the monarchy through a period of modernisation.

Ahead of the historic change on the throne, our colleagues from RTL Télé have produced a 45-minute documentary reflecting on the 25-year reign of Grand Duke Henri.

The film, titled "Facettë vun engem Règne," marks the end of an era for the Grand Duchy. On Friday, 3 October 2025, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume is set to succeed his father, becoming Luxembourg's new head of state.

The documentary examines how Grand Duke Henri guided the monarchy through a period of significant modernisation and socio-political change. It explores the challenge of redefining the Grand Ducal Family's role in a society increasingly distant from the war and post-war patriotism that once underpinned its foundation.

Through interviews with numerous figures from politics and civil society, the programme paints a portrait of a modern monarchy that, while facing periods of criticism, continues to be supported by a broad majority of the population.

The documentary is available to stream now on RTL Today and RTL PLAY. It will also receive a linear broadcast on RTL Télé on Thursday evening, the eve of the abdication, immediately following the news (approx. 8pm).

Please note the film is in Luxembourgish and does not have English subtitles.
