In 2024, South Korea appointed Ambassador Chun Young-Hee as its first resident envoy to Luxembourg, marking a new chapter in diplomatic relations.
Until now, diplomatic affairs with the Grand Duchy had been handled from Brussels, with only a small consulate in Luxembourg. "We will have more people and more infrastructure to strengthen cooperation with Luxembourg", said Ambassador Chun commenting on his new diplomatic post.
Speaking ahead of the embassy’s official opening at a ceremony on Friday, Mr. Chun underlined South Korea’s hopes of strengthening ties with Luxembourg, a country he said shares many values with his own. "We share universal values such as democracy, human rights, and the rule of law." He also highlighted the historic bond between the two nations, referring to Luxembourg’s participation in the Korean War: "Since then, we have had a very good relationship."
The opening of South Korea’s embassy in Luxembourg is part of a broader plan by the Korean government to expand its diplomatic presence worldwide. A plan initially announced in 2023, that includes 11 other countries alongside the Grand Duchy.
