Over half of the pensions paid out by Luxembourg are dispensed to claimants living abroad.
The number of people collecting a Luxembourg pension has risen by 37.4% – or 63,000 claimants – over the last nine years. In December 2015, 167,367 pensions were paid out by the national pension fund (CNAP), compared to 229,906 in December 2024.
Over half of the claimants live abroad, according to social security minister Martine Deprez, in response to a parliamentary question submitted by the DP.
118,650 pensions are paid out to non-residents, or 51.6% of all pensions. A decade ago, just 46.2% of pensioners lived abroad.
The pension fund sends out an annual life certificate to each claimant living abroad, which they must get validated at their local municipal council. The certificate is designed to confirm that the recipient is still living and in residence at the address on file with CNAP.
Luxembourg has an agreement with its neighbouring countries to exchange information on "death data", which is shared on a monthly basis.
