Freshly unveiled by the Banque centrale du Luxembourg, the country's euro coins will soon showcase Grand Duke Guillaume, celebrating his accession to the throne.
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg (BCL) has unveiled the new national faces of Luxembourg's euro coins, which will feature the portrait of Grand Duke Guillaume following his accession to the throne on 3 October 2025. The redesigned coins will enter circulation at the beginning of 2026.
BCL president Gaston Reinesch described the launch as both a tribute to Luxembourg's new head of state and a continuation of the country's long-standing numismatic tradition. Through their design, these coins "pay tribute to the Sovereign, Head of State, and symbol of national unity and independence", he underlined in a statement.
As is customary, the new portrait of Grand Duke Guillaume faces the opposite direction from that of his predecessor, Grand Duke Henri. Italian artist Chiara Principe designed the circulation coins, while Austrian engraver Helmut Andexlinger created the design for collectors' editions.
The new coinage is divided into three groups of denominations: 1, 2, and 5 cents; 10, 20, and 50 cents; €1 and €2 coins; and finally the collectors' editions. Each group features a distinct design, incorporating symbols such as the Luxembourgish flag and the national lion.
All coins will bear the year 2026 and the initials of the respective artists.
The BCL confirmed that older coins featuring Grand Duke Henri will remain valid and in circulation alongside the new issues. Around nine million Luxembourg euro coins were created in 2025, though the exact mintage for 2026 has yet to be determined.
Collectors will also be able to purchase special proof and commemorative editions through the BCL's 'Numismatic Space' at 43 avenue Monterey in Luxembourg City and via its online shop.
