ADR President Alexandra Schoos has defended her party's stance against making abortion a constitutional right, while offering nuanced views on US President Donald Trump's rhetoric and maintaining support for negotiations with Vladimir Putin.

In an interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio on Wednesday morning, Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR) president and MP Alexandra Schoos discussed her party's position on enshrining abortion rights in the Constitution, among other topics.

Schoos stated that while the ADR does not question the existing law on abortion, it opposes elevating it to a constitutional right. She argued that the Constitution should govern fundamental principles, whereas abortion involves "very individual cases for a very limited number of people."

The MP characterised the initiative by The Left (Déi Lénk) to anchor abortion in the Constitution as "smoke and mirrors" and "populism". She cited pandemic-era restrictions on constitutional freedoms as an example of how such rights can be limited.

For Schoos, the core issue is what merits inclusion in the Constitution, noting that any law or constitutional article faces some risk of future repeal.

While the ADR voted against the legalisation of abortion over a decade ago, Schoos now described the current law as "excellent". However, she later expressed concern about the potential trivialisation of abortion, emphasising it is not a simple act.

Schoos stressed that women and men must be aware that sexual intercourse can have consequences, clarifying that abortion should remain possible "in exceptional cases" – a position the ADR does not challenge. The MP concluded by stating she awaits further data on the reasons women seek abortions.

Kirk, Trump, and Putin

The interview also covered international figures, including the recent assassination of far-right US activist Charlie Kirk. Schoos aligned herself with Kirk's wife, who publicly forgave the attacker. When asked about US President Donald Trump's contrasting approach of taking stronger action against political opponents, Schoos suggested: "Perhaps the wife can do it better, perhaps she has a different relationship with Christianity."

She characterised Trump's rhetoric as that of a politician driven by emotion, stating that "he hates [his opponents], yes, those are his emotions."

Despite Trump's calls to censure critical comedians, Schoos argued that this does not indicate a desire to restrict freedom of expression overall. On the contrary, she contended that the US president supports "a plurality of opinion".

Regarding Russia, Schoos defended ADR MEP Fernand Kartheiser's continued calls for negotiations with President Vladimir Putin, despite the Russian leader's lack of steps toward peace and ongoing provocations against NATO.

The ADR maintains its stance that current sanctions are more damaging to the European Union than to Russia. The party also continues to criticise what it describes as the EU's "hypocrisy" for continuing to import Russian gas.
