Twenty-six women from Belgium and Luxembourg are trading their daily commute for a four-day charity bike ride to Liechtenstein.
The philosophy of the Bergeronnettes, an all-women cycling club from near Arlon, translates to seeing cycling as joy, good company, and showing solidarity with women who go through tough times.
The group cycles together throughout the year, commuting to work in Luxembourg during the week and meeting for longer rides at weekends. Once a year, they also take on a major challenge for charity. “This year, we decided to cross five countries, covering 500 kilometres,” said member Nathalie Hanus.
The riders left the Foyer headquarters in Leudelange early Thursday morning and are expected to arrive in Liechtenstein on Sunday after passing through Germany’s Black Forest, climbing as high as 3,000 metres by the time they reach their destination.
The 2025 challenge is raising funds for L’Archée, a shelter that supports women in need. “The shelter takes women in for up to 18 months to help them rebuild their lives. They may be survivors of domestic violence, trafficking, or refugees,” explains Nathalie Hanus.
The Bergeronnettes created a website dedicated to their Bergero-Challenge 2025 to raise money supporting heir cause (€4,500 had already been collected by midday on Friday). Since their challenge coincides with the European Mobility Week, their message about cycling and solidarity could not be more timely.
