An economist, Balanzategui was nominated by the state council following a proposal by the Minister for Health and Social Affairs, Martine Deprez.

The new president has been working for the National Health Fund (CNS) since 1998 and has acted as the Premier Conseiller de Direction since 2012. He has already assumed the function of acting president, taking charge of the CNS for one month in 2018.

Balanzategui, who previously worked at the European Commission, takes up his new post as the CNS faces depleted reserves, an issue that will be examined at the next quadripartite meeting, where government, unions, employers and social security representatives are due to discuss how to safeguard the health insurance system’s finances.
