Following recent criticism from Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, about 70 people demonstrated outside Parliament on Monday to demand that abortion rights be enshrined in the Constitution.

A bill is currently making its way through the legislative process that would enshrine this right in the Constitution. According to the demonstrators, this step is essential to ensure abortion rights remain protected regardless of political change.

They pointed to examples abroad showing how quickly the political climate can shift. For that reason, they argued, the right to abortion should not be left vulnerable and must be constitutionally guaranteed.

Several participants also responded to recent remarks by Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, who had said in a radio interview on Saturday that enshrining abortion rights in the Constitution would mark a "dark day in Luxembourg's history". Protesters said they were shocked by his words and found his reasoning impossible to accept.
