Two wolves have been spotted just across the Belgian border, leading to the creation of a permanent protection zone for farmers while Luxembourg authorities keep a close eye on their movements.
The two wolves were recently captured on camera by the public administration of Wallonia in a forest near Anlier, just a few kilometres from the Luxembourg border.
To better protect farmers and especially sheep, a permanent wolf presence zone has now been established across 29,000 hectares in the communes of Fauvillers, Léglise, Martelange, Habay and Attert. Within this zone, protective measures and financial aid for farmers will be organised.
Wolves possibly crossed the border
Laurent Schley, head of the Wildlife and Hunting Department at Luxembourg's Nature and Forest Agency, told RTL by phone that it is quite possible the wolves will cross into Luxembourg, or may even have already done so.
Luxembourg's authorities are in close contact with their Walloon counterparts to monitor wolf movements. Whether these are the same wolves previously confirmed in Luxembourg cannot yet be determined, Schley said.
According to L'Avenir, an information session will be held at the beginning of October for farmers, with Luxembourg participants also invited. The meeting will outline how livestock can be protected and what forms of financial support will be made available.
