The government recently convened its global corps of honorary consuls – volunteers who help advance the country's interests overseas – for a landmark meeting focused on diplomacy, economic promotion, and emergency assistance.

Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel convened the country's 160 honorary consuls for the first time on 11 July, highlighting their vital role in representing the Grand Duchy abroad and providing support during crises. The event, hosted at Berg Castle and also attended by Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Economy Minister Lex Delles, and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, saw around 120 consuls participate in person and take part in various workshops.

The consuls thus engaged in sessions on consular affairs and external trade and discussed ways to bolster Luxembourg's international presence. They also explored cultural landmarks, including the renowned 'The Family of Man' photography exhibition in Clervaux and Vianden Castle.

Honorary consuls, many of whom are not Luxembourgish citizens, serve voluntarily and are not government employees. They work closely with embassies and consulates to promote Luxembourg's interests abroad, assist citizens in distress, support economic ties, and foster cultural and scientific exchanges.

The first-time meeting underlined the strategic importance of these proxy diplomats in expanding Luxembourg's global footprint and enhancing international cooperation.
