Luxembourg authorities have launched a corruption probe into a controversial municipal land sale after uncovering personal ties between Differdange's mayor and a real estate developer, with police conducting coordinated raids on Tuesday.
The Luxembourg public prosecutor's office has launched a criminal investigation into a potentially fraudulent property transaction involving a local municipality, according to a Tuesday press release.
Authorities became aware in late December 2024 of a land sale from an unnamed municipality to a private real estate company. The prosecutor's office alleges the deal left the municipality "significantly disadvantaged" while highlighting personal connections between the mayor and the purchasing company's director.
Investigators revealed the two officials serve together on a football club committee and were formerly business partners in a property venture until the mayor transferred his shares to his son, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest in the transaction.
On Tuesday morning, 28 officers from the Criminal Police Service's Economic and Financial Unit conducted coordinated raids at multiple locations including private residences of involved parties, the municipal administration building, and the notary's office that processed the transaction. Specialists from the New Technologies Section provided additional support during these operations.
The prosecutor's office has requested formal investigations for potential corruption and influence peddling. An examining magistrate is overseeing the case as inquiries continue.
While the public prosecutor's office declined to officially confirm the municipality involved, information obtained by RTL suggests that the transaction occurred in Differdange and the mayor in question would therefore be Guy Altmeisch.
