Train services will be suspended between Bettembourg and Luxembourg City from mid-July to mid-September, affecting both commuters from the south and cross border workers.

Train traffic between Luxembourg City and Bettembourg, one of the country’s busiest rail corridors, will be suspended from Saturday 12 July until Sunday 14 September.

The CFL is continuing work on the Luxembourg–Bettembourg line, a project designed to allow international trains to operate in parallel to the current tracks running through Berchem. Construction also includes the new second platform at Howald station, alongside extensive track upgrades during the summer months.

As a result, there will be a full closure of two key railway lines from the evening of Friday 11 July through Sunday 14 September:

  • Line 60 (Luxembourg–Esch-sur-Alzette–Rodange)
  • Line 90 (Luxembourg–Thionville–Metz)

To maintain connectivity, replacement bus services (labelled L60 and L90) will run frequently, every five minutes during rush hours, between Luxembourg City (central station) and Bettembourg, with a stop in Gasperich (Hildegard von Bingen). Passengers will then be able to board their usual trains towards France, Esch-sur-Alzette or Rodange. The CFL warns passengers to expect longer journey times, around 25 to 45 minutes.

In response to RTL, CFL clarified that L60/L90 buses travelling from Luxembourg to Bettembourg will partly use the A3 motorway. This allows them to take advantage of the new lane reserved for carpooling and public transport. However, the reverse route (Bettembourg to Luxembourg) will avoid the A3 due to risks of major congestion or roadblocks in the event of accidents, which could shut down the entire replacement service.

Additional bus options will also be in place, including a direct line between Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette. Buses will also operate from the Bonnevoie Rocade stop, Limpertsberg (Boulevard Paul Eyschen), and Luxexpo in Kirchberg. A special "TGV Luxembourg" bus will be reserved for high-speed train passengers headed through Bettembourg and Thionville.

More summer disruptions across the network

In addition to the Bettembourg closure, further maintenance will hit other major routes:

  • Luxembourg - Ettelbruck / Diekirch: No trains between Saturday 19 July and Sunday 10 August. Replacement buses will run from Limpertsberg, Luxembourg Rocade, and Luxexpo.

  • Luxembourg - Wasserbillig - Trier (Luxembourg section only): Closed from Saturday 23 August to Sunday 14 September. Substitution buses will serve the Luxembourg Rocade.
