Unlike the British monarchy, which receives substantial state subsidies, the Grand Duke’s wealth primarily stems from private holdings, including real estate, land, jewellery, and other valuable assets, the tabloid writes. Over the past three years, the UK government has allocated £102 million (€119 million) to the royal family, while Luxembourg’s court has received just €10 million, covering travel expenses and staff salaries.
In 2023, the Grand Ducal Court’s expenditures totalled €18.5 million, covering staff costs, operating expenses, and allowances to the Grand Ducal family, among other items – representing an 18.6% increase from 2022, when the Court spent €15.6 million.
Despite leading in Europe, Luxembourg’s royal wealth is far from the highest globally. Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his family top the list with an estimated €39 billion in assets.
Within Europe, Liechtenstein follows Luxembourg with €2.75 billion, while Monaco comes third with €894 million. The British royal family, often perceived as one of the wealthiest, ranks fourth with €685 million. Spain’s monarchy lags far behind, with assets of just €2.5 million.
