Following a period of significant challenges, including bankruptcies and widespread layoffs, the construction sector in Luxembourg is experiencing a rebound.
The Luxembourg construction sector is showing signs of recovery, with recruitment picking up after a downturn in 2024.
Following a challenging year marked by multiple bankruptcies, the industry has begun hiring again, according to a recent study by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC). Recruitment hit its lowest point in the first quarter of 2024, prompting the government to declare a state of crisis. However, the sector rebounded in the subsequent quarters, reflecting a gradual improvement.
The study highlights that "job losses in construction are showing a downwards trend," with positive trends observed in both specialist construction work and building construction. Additionally, there has been a slight decrease in contract terminations, signalling "the beginning of a recovery." By the end of March 2024, the sector had experienced approximately 2,500 job losses, leaving total employment at 48,800–a decline from the 51,400 workers employed in March 2023.
In residential construction, the off-plan (VEFA) market also shows signs of improvement, with Jean-Paul Scheuren, vice-president of the Chamber of Real Estate, noting "light at the end of the tunnel."
