MP Alexandra Schoos, President of the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR)
Following the ADR's decision to sanction MP Tom Weidig with a written warning for liking a hateful Facebook comment, the LSAP is demanding the resignation of ADR President Alexandra Schoos.
The Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) has called for the resignation of MP Alexandra Schoos, President of the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR), following the ADR's decision to issue a "written warning" to MP Tom Weidig.
The LSAP argues that Schoos stepping down would be the "logical consequence" of the ADR's handling of the matter. The controversy stems from Weidig's decision to "like" a Facebook comment advocating for the extermination of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Ben Streff, speaking on behalf of the LSAP, expressed disappointment that the ADR did not expel Weidig, stating that the incident crossed red lines related to "homophobia and racism," which he said could "no longer be tolerated." Streff warned that without stricter consequences, the ADR risks becoming an "openly far-right party" and urged Schoos to take responsibility by resigning if she disagrees with the way her party has handled the situation.
The ADR's national committee concluded on Monday evening that Weidig "did not intend to advocate for the extermination of anyone." In a brief press release, the party noted that the MP had apologised and acknowledged his mistake. He received a written warning due to his "continual" behaviour on social media. However, the ADR did not provide details about the "other measures" mentioned in the release.
Requests for comment from Tom Weidig and ADR representatives by our colleagues from RTL.lu were either declined or went unanswered.
