The ADR has taken action against MP Tom Weidig after his endorsement of a hateful Facebook comment targeting the LGBTQIA+ community drew widespread condemnation.
The Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR) has issued a decision regarding MP Tom Weidig's Facebook like, which had sparked widespread condemnation.
On Tuesday, the ADR announced that Weidig had received a "written warning" for liking a comment that called for the extermination of the LGBTQIA+ community. The incident had drawn significant criticism from all other parliamentary parties, prompting the ADR's executive committee to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Weidig last week. Six parties had publicly urged the ADR to impose sanctions on the MP.
The issue was discussed during a meeting of the ADR's national committee on Monday evening. In a press release issued on Tuesday, the party stated that Weidig "has apologised and admitted that he made a mistake". Following discussions with the MP, the ADR concluded that Weidig "did not intend to advocate for the extermination of anyone".
The written warning was reportedly issued due to Weidig's "continual" behaviour on social media. The ADR also mentioned that "other measures" were being considered but did not provide further details. The party declared the matter resolved and stated that the national committee would not disclose any additional actions to the public.
In parallel, Rosa Lëtzebuerg, an LGBTQIA+ advocacy group, has launched legal proceedings against both the author of the Facebook comment and Weidig.
This incident echoes a similar controversy in 2017, when Joe Thein, a local ADR representative, was expelled from the party for "liking" a comment on social media. The comment had made an implicit reference to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, suggesting that then-Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn should "go for a ride in a convertible in Dallas".
