In a rare show of unity, six political parties have joined forces to demand that the ADR sanction MP Tom Weidig over a social media incident that drew widespread condemnation.
It is not every day that six political parties come together to address the president of another party. Yet, this is precisely what occurred following widespread criticism of a Facebook "like" by MP Tom Weidig.
On Saturday, Alexandra Schoos, President of the Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR), received a joint letter signed by the Democratic Party (DP), the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP), the Green Party (Déi Gréng), the Left Party (Déi Lénk), and the Pirate Party.
In the letter, the six parties urge Schoos to impose appropriate sanctions against MP Tom Weidig. The timing of the letter is significant: on Monday, the ADR's national committee is set to decide on potential disciplinary measures against Weidig.
For the signatory parties, the issue is clear: If the ADR chooses to retain an elected member of parliament who condones the extermination of a community, the party legitimises such rhetoric.
The six parties emphasise that the ADR and its president claim to uphold democratic values. They argue that the party must now take responsibility and demonstrate its commitment to those principles through decisive action.
