High housing prices have a significant impact on students, young professionals, and those still in training, but a new joint initiative between the Housing, Education, and Youth Ministers aims to help young people move into their own homes at an earlier age.
Over the past 10 years, around 200 new youth residences have been built, providing a total of 800 such homes across the Grand Duchy. However, for Claude Meisch, the Housing Minister, this number is not enough. On Wednesday, he introduced a new initiative to increase the availability of such homes. Currently, the government is looking for new partners, including municipalities, associations, and other institutions, to help implement the project. The state will subsidise up to 75% of the cost.
In terms of rent, it will be adjusted to the income level of young tenants. Typically, the rent will amount to 10% of the tenant's income.
Examples of such housing already exist in municipalities like Mondercange. In Bergem, for instance, there is a residence located in the former nursery school, exclusively for young tenants. It offers 18 flats, each measuring 20 square meters. The state and the municipality jointly funded the building costs. Meisch hopes that these residences will serve as a model for future similar projects.
