International School Gaston Thorn (EIGT) is expanding with two new sites to accommodate the increasing demand for places. A new primary school will open in Kirchberg, while a secondary campus will be established in Walferdange, easing pressure on the school’s existing locations in Cessange and Hollerich.
Principal Jesse Medinger, speaking on The Sam Steen Show on Today Radio, highlighted the overwhelming interest in the school, which last year saw its admissions website crash due to high demand. “It was tough turning so many families away,” she said. “Thankfully, the Ministry has approved these new sites, allowing us to welcome more students.”

The expansion aligns with the Luxembourg government’s broader initiative, led by Minister of Education Claude Meisch, to increase capacity in accredited European schools. With the country’s population continuing to grow, demand for places in public European schools has surged, particularly for multilingual education. These new campuses will operate independently while remaining under the leadership of the EIGT team.
The Walferdange secondary site, just a seven-minute train ride from the city centre, offers a quiet, traditional setting ideal for older students, while Kirchberg’s central location makes it highly accessible for families. Existing sites will remain operational, with students largely staying at their assigned campus throughout their schooling.
To provide prospective families with insight into school life, the institution is holding an Open Day this Saturday from 10am to 3pm at its Hollerich campus. Student-led tours will showcase the facilities, and a virtual tour of the secondary school will be available online after the event.
Applications for the 2025 school year open on 1st March at 7am via eigt.lu. Medinger advises families to be prepared with necessary documents to secure a place. “We’re hoping the site doesn’t crash this year,” she added.
