Luxembourg's senior housing costs are prompting government reforms to expand financial aid for elderly residents, including increased support for living expenses and primary needs.

With starting prices ranging from €1,900 to €4,500 a month, it is clear that not everybody can afford a room in one of Luxembourg's 56 senior homes. Roughly 700 people are therefore currently being supported by the National Solidarity Fund (FNS), as revealed by Family Affairs Minister Max Hahn. Speaking to RTL, Hahn explained that the FNS can award aid for rents of up to €3,200.

The laws stipulating the limits of FNS aid are currently being reviewed so that more people can benefit from the support. The cap is thus to be replaced with the average single room price, meaning that any room below will count as an FNS-supported room.

Another measure is the introduction of an additional €600 to support living expenses, along with a new allowance which will be introduced to cover costs for essential needs, including hygiene products, phone bills, internet, and laundry.

However, what remains in place is that recipients are obliged to pay back the aids if their financial situation significantly improves.

Three new senior homes are to open in 2025 and there further are 15 assisted living facilities in the country. An overview of all availabilities and offers can be found at the recently created website infosenior.lu.
