Luxembourg's Health Minister, Martine Deprez, confirmed on Tuesday that the abortion time limit will stay at 12 weeks, rejecting calls to extend it to 14 weeks, citing the ethics committee's assessment and the coalition agreement.
The ethics committee, which took nearly a year to issue its assessment, failed to offer definitive guidance, a decision criticised by LSAP MP and former Minister of Health Paulette Lenert.
Deprez underscored the complexity of the issue, stating that there is an ethical dilemma, as certain disabilities can only be detected after 12 weeks of pregnancy, a complex issue that remains unresolved. "In short: Nothing is written about it in the coalition agreement", Deprez concluded.
In neighbouring countries like France, the right to abortion is enshrined in the Constitution, with the government extending the limit to 14 weeks. In the Netherlands, abortions are permitted up to 24 weeks, while Germany and Belgium adhere to the same 12-week limit as Luxembourg.
