Luxembourg City's Greens have voiced strong criticism of the city's municipal council's approach to housing policy, calling on the CSV-DP coalition to take more decisive action.
In a press briefing on Friday morning, the Greens acknowledged the council's increased spending to tackle the housing crisis as a positive step. However, they argue that financial measures alone are insufficient. François Benoy, municipal council member for the Greens, highlighted the lack of clear plans for newly acquired properties under the VEFA scheme – flats being built and purchased by the city.
"For us, it's clear: these projects must end up on the rental market. They should remain under the City of Luxembourg's ownership and primarily, if not entirely, be dedicated to rental use so they are accessible to future generations. And yet, the DP-CSV municipal executives have not made a firm commitment to this," Benoy said.
The Greens also criticised the coalition for failing to expand social rental housing management. Fabricio Costa, representative of the Greens, underlined the need for additional measures, including the introduction of a municipal vacancy tax and an increase in property tax on undeveloped land.
