This represents a 10% increase in just one year, reinforcing the appeal of CFL’s services and the essential role of trains in public transportation across Luxembourg and its neighboring regions. Over the past two decades, the number of CFL passengers has more than doubled, rising from 14.1 million in 2005 to 31.3 million in 2024.

Record breaking growth

The Luxembourg – Esch/Alzette – Rodange line remained the busiest route, with 9.9 million passengers in 2024. The most significant increase, however, was recorded on the Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier line, which saw an 18.01% rise compared to 2023. Below is a breakdown of the number of passengers per CFL line in 2024, along with growth rates from the previous year:

  • Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier: 2.5 million passengers (+18.01%)

Commitment to quality and sustainable mobility

CFL CEO Marc Wengler expressed gratitude for the rising number of passengers, attributing it to the dedication of over 5,000 employees. “The continuous increase in train usage, aside from the COVID-19 period, is the greatest reward for our team’s daily commitment. Our passengers’ trust and loyalty validate our customer-centric strategy, which we refine based on their feedback throughout the year. More than ever, we strive to remain the preferred mobility choice by offering interconnected transport solutions built around trains – one of the most sustainable travel modes in line with today’s environmental challenges.”

Infrastructure and fleet expansion

CFL’s 2024 passenger figures reflect substantial investments in railway infrastructure aimed at promoting multimodal transport and encouraging a shift from car travel to train travel. A significant milestone was reached in September 2024 with the introduction of CFL’s new Coradia trains. The gradual deployment of 34 Coradia trainsets by 2026 marks a historic investment in the CFL fleet. This upgrade will increase seating capacity by 46%, significantly enhancing passenger comfort.

Additionally, the newly modernized Rodange station was inaugurated in 2024, allowing for longer trains with more seating capacity and improved punctuality through optimized train traffic management.

These advancements highlight CFL’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its services, ensuring reliable, efficient, and sustainable transportation for its growing passenger base.
