The Luxembourg National Railway Company (CFL) celebrated a successful business year in 2023, maintaining revenues above €1 billion. Notably, a quarter of these revenues stemmed from freight operations.
With a net result of €18 million, CFL expanded its workforce by over 500 employees, bringing the total to over 5,100.
Throughout 2023, CFL trains covered a distance exceeding 7 million kilometres. Despite a slight dip from 2022, punctuality remained high at 90.1%, with CFL reaffirming its commitment to the target of achieving 92% punctuality for their trains.
A significant milestone was reached in passenger numbers, with CFL recording a record-breaking 28.7 million passengers, compared to 22 million in 2022. This growth was observed across all lines, with the Luxembourg City - Esch-sur-Alzette - Rodange line retaining its status as the busiest. Notably, the Lorraine corridor (Luxembourg City - Bettembourg - Metz/Nancy line) experienced the largest increase (+45%), attributed to cross-border commuter flows.
CFL's investments soared to a record €140.5 million in 2023, marking a substantial 59.1% increase from 2022. These investments were directed towards three major projects: the acquisition of 34 new Coradia trains, slated for phased implementation between 2024 and 2026, which will boost seating capacity by 46%; the modernisation of 10 TER2N-ng railcars as part of their "mid-life" operation; and the inauguration of Hall 4 at the Bonnevoie storage and maintenance centre, primarily dedicated to the upkeep and maintenance of Coradia trains.
