The police will be mobilised to ensure everyone's safety on New Year's Eve.
On 31 December, like every other night of the year, officers will be on duty. Here are their tips for having a great evening.
"As with every year, the police will increase their presence on New Year's Eve night to better handle necessary interventions," they announced in a press release.
"The 12 police stations across the country that operate 24/7 will also do so on the night from 31 December to 1 January."
According to the police, New Year's Eve will be one of the "busiest nights of the year." The emergency number 113 will operate as usual and will remain the main contact for reaching law enforcement.
The police assure that they "will respond to the numerous calls from the public regarding noise disturbances caused by various parties or fireworks, depending on their availability and priorities."
They ask partygoers to respect "those who do not wish to or cannot celebrate" and encourage them to "show tolerance towards those who are celebrating."
If you plan to spend New Year's Eve at an outdoor event, be careful: "Year-end events may attract dishonest people, including pickpockets," the police warn.
Here are some tips they share:
- Be mindful of your belongings and bags, and don’t leave them unattended.
- Stay alert when in a crowd (e.g., in queues).
- Keep your wallet in the inside pocket of your jacket, as it’s less accessible to thieves than other pockets.
- Avoid physical contact with people you don’t know. Pickpockets often try to get close to their victims by bumping into them or making dancing movements to steal their wallet or mobile phone.
- Alcohol is one of the main factors behind serious accidents. Don’t drive if you’ve consumed alcohol.
- Make sure no one can access your drinks to prevent someone from spiking them with harmful substances.
- If you notice suspicious people or objects, report them to the emergency number 113 and follow the officers' instructions.
