The Luxembourg police responded to a wave of drink-driving cases on Friday night.
Police have reported a series of drink-driving cases across the country, reflecting a troubling trend that coincides with the festive season.
At approximately 1.30am, officers discovered a car in a ravine near Karelshaff, Colmar-Berg. The vehicle's engine was still running, and the driver, who was asleep behind the wheel, tested positive for alcohol. Holding a Belgian driving licence, the individual was banned from driving, and a formal complaint was filed.
At around 2am, a vehicle with a defective tyre was intercepted on the Büchler Bridge in Luxembourg City. The driver, found to be under the influence of alcohol, had their licence withdrawn, and a complaint was issued.
At the same time, police received reports of a car travelling at an unusually slow speed – just 30 km/h – on the A4 near Leudelange. Officers located the vehicle shortly afterward and confirmed that the driver was intoxicated. Their driving licence was also confiscated.
Later, at approximately 5am in Oberkorn, another driver lost their licence after their vehicle repeatedly collided with the kerb before being stopped by police.
A separate incident occurred around the same time on the A4 motorway toward Esch/Alzette. Police observed a vehicle exceeding the speed limit before it exited the motorway and came to a stop in Foetz. The driver, who tested positive for alcohol, faced penalties for both speeding and driving under the influence, resulting in the withdrawal of their licence and the filing of a complaint.
Further drink-driving offences were reported on Friday afternoon at 4pm in Strassen, at 6pm in Keispelt, and on Saturday morning at 5am in Kockelscheuer, where additional licences were revoked.
