Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus from the World Health Organisation (WHO) is in Luxembourg, where he was first welcomed by Prime Minister Luc Frieden, and later is expected at the Grand Ducal Palace.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is on a one-day work visit to the Grand Duchy. After meeting PM Luc Frieden in the morning, he attended a conference with ministers Xavier Bettel and Martine Deprez.
During his visit he signed two new partnership agreements between Luxembourg and the WHO.
Luxembourg aims to strengthen its cooperation with the World Health Organisation. The two agreements signed are worth €46.5 million in total.
Part of the budget will contribute to the period 2025-2028, with €500,000 in particular destined to fight Mpox. The Director-General emphasised the importance of international cooperation. He is optimistic and believes in the finality of the pandemic treaty in February 2025.
Responding to the question whether the world is better prepared for a pandemic, his answer is "yes and no".
While several institutions were created during the pandemic to simplify the international exchange of data, some countries still experience severe deficits in healthcare, making no country completely safe.
Preventative vaccinations are a crucial building block, the doctor underlined.
