Amid ongoing concerns about a toxic atmosphere, Lycée Josy Barthel in Mamer is set to start anew with Gil Belling as headmaster, as announced by the Education Ministry on Thursday.

After reports of a toxic work environment at Lycée Josy Barthel in Mamer circulated for months, Minister of Education Claude Meisch announced the appointment of Gil Belling as the school's new headmaster on Thursday.

Belling, who previously served as Director of Vocational Training at the Ministry of Education and President of WorldSkills Luxembourg, will succeed Claude Christnach. The outgoing headmaster chose not to seek a third term amid growing tensions and a strained atmosphere between the school's management and a certain number of teachers and students.

The discontent reportedly led several teachers to leave the school, citing an intolerable "toxic environment". In response, a committee was established to address these grievances.

As part of the measures to resolve the issues, the Ministry of Education deployed two coaches to assess the situation at the school. An initial evaluation of the steps taken is planned for the end of 2024 to determine their effectiveness.
