Following allegations of a toxic work environment at Lycée Josy Barthel in Mamer, there now appear to be initial consequences.

Concerns about a strained atmosphere between the school’s administration and individual teachers were first reported to the Ministry of Education in November 2023. The accusations were later supported by the Science and Education Union (SEW) in the summer of 2024.

In an internal email obtained by our colleagues from RTL.lu, Headmaster Claude Christnach informed staff that he would not be seeking another mandate when his current term expires on 31 December 2024. Additionally, a planned plenary assembly for teachers, scheduled for Tuesday, has been cancelled.

As of now, it remains unclear who will succeed Christnach as headmaster or if there will be further changes within the school’s administration.

Just one week prior, the Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the reported issues at Lycée Josy Barthel, stating that it takes the allegations seriously. The ministry outlined plans aimed at improving the situation, including coaching for school administrators, a mediation procedure, and the creation of a complaints management commission.

It remains to be seen whether these measures are still relevant in light of recent developments.
