As numerous ships remain stranded after an accident at a lock on the Moselle River, the Government Council decided on Wednesday to temporarily allow lorries to travel on Luxembourg roads on Sundays.
Following the accident at a Moselle lock ten days ago, the Luxembourg government has decided to temporarily lift the Sunday travel ban applying to lorries.
Lorries will therefore be allowed to drive on Luxembourg roads on Sundays for a maximum of six months. This measure has been decided by the government in order to ensure the continuation of freight transport.
Following an accident at a lock in Germany, navigation on the Moselle has been severely disrupted, if not been rendered virtually impossible for some vessels. As a result, several million tonnes of goods have to be transported by lorry.
The German authorities have already taken the same decision regarding their own territory. Repair work on the lock is scheduled to last until the end of March 2025.
