The final verdict has been delivered in a police brutality case, with the main officer sentenced to prison, fined €10,000, and banned from duty for 10 years. The four other officers implicated in the case have all received suspended prison sentences and fines.
A police officer has been sentenced to six years in prison, five of them suspended, for striking a restrained victim in the face with a running start while wearing reinforced gloves at the Hospital Center Emile Mayrisch in 2019, causing multiple facial fractures. At the time, the victim’s hands were cuffed behind their back and they offered no resistance.
The four other officers present, who helped restrain the victim while their superior struck him, and later assisted in destroying evidence and falsifying witness statements, were each handed three-year prison sentences, fully suspended. They were also fined €10,000 and €5,000 respectively.
The main perpetrator has been banned from working as a police officer for 10 years. No professional bans were imposed on the four others, some of whom were very young. Appeals against the verdict can be filed within 40 days.
