POLICE OPERATION – Police in Keispelt discovered weapons and ammunition yesterday evening while searching a property in connection with a missing person enquiry. A number of neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution, and officers established a security cordon around the area. The special unit was called in. The missing person has since been found safe. Shortly before 10pm last night, police confirmed there was no security risk to the public, though the cordon will remain in place until all suspicious items have been secured.
TRAFFIC ACCIDENT – A serious accident occurred this morning around 4.15am between Grevenmacher and Mertert. A car overturned, leaving one person injured. An ambulance and the SAMU were deployed to the scene. Rescue services have also reported further injuries from separate accidents yesterday evening, including two pedestrians. In Kirchberg, a pedestrian was struck just before 6pm, as was another on the main road between Findel and Neudorf.
NO CHARGES – Luxembourg's former Defence Minister François Bausch and ex-Army Chief Alain Duschène will not face criminal charges over the 2019 Waldhof military camp explosion that killed two people. The judicial administration confirmed the decision yesterday.
EMPLOYMENT FIGURES – Luxembourg has the EU's second-lowest rate of households with little or no employment at 3.9%, according to Eurostat. Only Slovenia ranked better at 3.5%, whilst the EU average stands at 7.9%.
WORLD EXPO – Luxembourg's pavilion at the 2025 Osaka World Expo attracted 379,000 visitors over six months, including around 1,000 residents of the Grand Duchy, which organisers have called a big success. Minister Xavier Bettel has expressed personal support for participating in the next World Expo in Riyadh in 2030, pending Government Council approval.
World
US SHOOTING – Two National Guard soldiers have been shot and critically wounded near the White House. President Trump called it an 'act of terror' by an Afghan man who arrived during the 2021 evacuations. Trump has halted all Afghan immigration processing.
HONG KONG FIRE – A devastating fire in a Hong Kong high-rise building has killed at least 44 people, with hundreds still missing. Police have arrested three men for gross negligence after flammable materials left during maintenance caused the blaze to spread out of control.
UKRAINE WAR – Today was the US-set deadline for Ukraine to sign a peace plan with Russia, though Washington now calls it flexible. President Zelensky says Ukraine is ready to advance on the revised proposal despite remaining differences. Russia has contradicted Donald Trump's claims that Moscow is offering concessions.
POPE TOUR – Pope Leo XIV begins his first overseas trip today, visiting Turkey and Lebanon over six days to promote Christian unity and urge peace in the Middle East. In Turkey, he will mark the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. The trip is the first major international test for the US-born pope elected in May.
US THANKSGIVING – America celebrates Thanksgiving today. New York's Macy's parade features giant balloons and floats, while Native American groups hold a National Day of Mourning in Massachusetts. President Trump will speak to US Armed Forces from Mar-a-Lago later.

FOOTBALL – Liverpool suffered a 4-1 Champions League loss to PSV at Anfield, their ninth defeat in 12 games. Arsenal beat Bayern Munich 3-1 to take top spot in the table, while PSG defeated Tottenham 5-3 and Real Madrid edged Olympiacos 4-3.
RUGBY – Luxembourg's men's rugby team has named a 26-man squad for their upcoming fixture against Estonia in the Rugby Europe Conference. Four potential new caps have been included after impressive club performances. Luxembourg won their opener against Norway while Estonia will be looking to make amend from their first game where they lost to Finland.
